The list of sights in Sydney is awe inspiring. Let’s start with the obvious: Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzen who won a competition in the 1950s to design Australia’s most recognised and iconic architectural monument. Take the ferry from the Circular Quay to enjoy the most spectacular view. Next on the list would be the Royal Botanic Gardens, established in 1816 as a sort of vegetable patch for the colony, believe it or not. It is a very beautiful place to picnic or walk and even the signs are inviting and relaxed as instead of ‘Keep off the grass’ they simply say ‘Please walk on the grass’…

Whilst you’re taking in the Opera House take a moment to look at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it is so big that spookily you will catch sight of it from the corner of your eye wherever you are in the city. It is dubbed the old coat hanger and is 14m high and weighs a massive 53,000 tonnes. The best way is to cross on foot, the views are awesome.

Sydney is of course also very famous for Bondi Beach, arguably one of the world’s greatest beaches, as the Pacific ocean arrives in great swells and provides great surfing waves. For kids try the saltwater sea baths at the ends of the beach which are slightly more protected. There are two surf clubs, Bondi and North Bondi and it is advised to swim between the flags to avoid the worst rips and holes. Many people have to be rescued every year and they even make a TV show about these people who unfortunately become statistics so stay safe and swim between the flags.

Going out in Sydney is legendary and there really is so much to choose from, try the Bank Hotel which attracts a kooky mix of lesbians and students, gays and well, almost everyone else. The Sydney Theatre Company is top class in the theatre world and is a must-do for catching important plays; it has seen the likes of Mel Gibson, Judy Davis et al grace the boards here. The Opera House of course is also a must; it has five main stages and is the glamorous rock at the heart of Sydney social life so make sure you book in advance for a performance here. For those who want to relax and just have a drink then try The Golden Sheaf hotel, it is a rambling old brick pub and has a shady beer garden, a sports bar and pool tables, there is a rooftop terrace and a dancefloor if you’re in the mood.
