Testing for Peripheral Vascular Disease

Genetic health testing is a physician ordered test in the USA. The physician in question will need to authorise the testing to go ahead by signing the consent forms which we provide inside our sample collection kit.

Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) describes a condition whereby the arteries of the arms and legs become narrow or blocked, which can cause significant pain. Such pain is commonly referred to by doctors as intermittent claudication and, if the condition is left untreated for any length of time, limb amputation may be necessary. The narrowing or blockage of arteries is typically caused by fat and calcium deposits or inflammation of vascular cells. Poor diet (high in fat, low in vitamins C and E), diabetes, lack of regular exercise and smoking are chiefly to blame for the condition, which is common in people over 55 years. Some people will have a genetic predisposition to peripheral vascular disease.

Genetic predisposition DNA testing for peripheral vascular disease is important in order to identify whether an individual suffers from a genetic predisposition to the condition. DNA testing peripheral vascular disease is necessary because the condition has a genetic origin in so far as it is most commonly found in people whose relatives have also suffered from it. DNA tests allow doctors to determine whether or not a patient is likely to develop peripheral vascular disease by looking at their genetic susceptibility to nicotine addiction, which can obviously lead to heavy long term smoking. Peripheral vascular disease can be treated with various medications that help to alleviate the associated pain whilst lowering fat and cholesterol levels. Medication is also used to regulate blood pressure and sugar levels. Peripheral vascular disease is best treated by undertaking regular exercise and enjoying a healthy balanced diet.
